Claude Code Mods: Customize Your AI Coding Assistant

Claude Code mods let developers customize how Claude Code behaves and looks. Built with JavaScript or TypeScript, mods can react to tool calls, prompts, session events, and interface updates.

A mod can:

• Add custom panels, buttons, and status indicators.

• Rewrite prompts or tool calls.

• Block potentially dangerous commands.

• Add slash commands.

• Replace or extend existing Claude Code features.

Practical Examples

The official tutorial introduces three example mods.

Token Weather displays context-window usage above the prompt, showing whether the session is clear, cloudy, or close to needing compaction.

Blast Radius pauses risky commands such as  rm -rf  or  git reset --hard , shows what they may affect, and lets the user approve or cancel them.

Replay Theater records file changes during a turn and lets developers review the edits one by one.

These examples show how mods can improve visibility, safety, and control during AI-assisted development.

How Mods Work

Mods use event handlers that can:

• Observe an event and let it continue.

• Rewrite the event before it continues.

• Handle the event directly and stop the default behavior.

They are distributed as Claude Code plugins and can be installed through the existing plugin system.

Developers can also ask Claude Code to create a mod from a natural-language description, then refine it using hot reload.

Why It Matters

Claude Code mods turn an AI coding assistant into a programmable development environment.

They can help developers add team conventions, safety checks, custom dashboards, project-specific workflows, and better feedback about what Claude is doing.

Because mods run with the same access as Claude Code, they should be installed only from sources you trust.

The key question is no longer only:

What can Claude Code do?

It is also:

How should Claude Code work for you?
